This is the largest game reserve in Africa, and the linchpin of Tanzania’s under-utilized but utterly compelling southern safari circuit.
Main attractions include the wetland scenery associated with the Rufiji River, the largest remaining population of the endangered African wild dog, large numbers of lion, elephant, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, and the other usual safari suspects.
Several low-key upmarket lodges offer game walks, river trips and fly-camps, as well as the standard game drives.
